In this performance, hip-hop dancer Farah Deen explores new ground, both in terms of her individual technique and innovative approach. She ventures out into a theatrical context rather unusual in urban dance and sets off on a journey through the fields of tension arising from religion and femininity. In her one-hour solo piece, she challenges a dominating worldview that defines a male figure as the human norm: the Vitruvian Man. What if Leonardo da Vinci had chosen a woman to depict idealised proportions?

Farah Deen grew up in Salzburg, Austria. Her mother is a native Carinthian, her father originally comes from Muslim-shaped Sri Lanka. Within her personal social environment, she lives and experiences influences from both cultures along with their compatibility and clashes.
The themes selected, the approach and the development of this piece are based on elements from the soloist’s autobiography. Through the spectrum of her personal experience, she examines polarizing social categories and sheds a light on their boundaries and grey areas.

the Sky above, the Mud below presents the dancer’s evolution, her search for personal authenticity that cannot be measured.

Die Hip-Hop-Tänzerin Farah Deen erforscht in der Performance individuelles technisches und improvisatorisches Neuland. Sie begibt sich in einen, für den urbanen Tanz eher unüblichen theatralen Kontext und auf eine Reise durch die Spannungsfelder Religion und Frau-Sein. In ihrem einstündigen Solostück konfrontiert sie ein dominierendes Weltbild, welches den Mann als menschliche Norm definiert. Der vitruvianische Mensch: Was wäre, wenn Leonardo da Vinci für seine Darstellung idealisierter Proportionen eine Frau gewählt hätte?

Farah Deen wuchs in Salzburg auf. Ihre Mutter ist gebürtige Kärntnerin, ihr Vater stammt aus dem muslimisch geprägten Sri Lanka. Der Einfluss beider Kulturen, deren Vereinbarkeit sowie deren Zusammenstoß lebt und erlebt sie in ihrem engen sozialen Umfeld. Die Themenwahl, Herangehensweise und Entwicklung des Stücks

beruhen auf autobiografischen Elementen der Solistin. Durch das Spektrum ihrer persönlichen Erfahrungen untersucht sie polarisierende gesellschaftliche Kategorien und beleuchtet deren Grenzverläufe und Grauzonen.
